More hobbies and careers would, in my opinion, make the game perfect. In order to progress at the rate that you want to, you probably will need to spend some real money. How quickly you want to progress determines how much you need to spend. The game provides an excellent escape from reality when you need it which, I feel, is the whole point of a life simulation game.
