Can tile be installed over painted concrete

The stones for the grinder are expensive, if you have a large area you will need multiple sets. And as I mentioned before, it won't work anyway. You may try using chemicals to remove it. You might get lucky and find out that the slab was sealed and then painted at a later date.

You can float a plywood floor, then screw your hardi to that, however it is quite expensive 6 mil membrane under plywood and under your greenboard 2 layers of half inch plywood not osb screw through the green board into the plywood short screws. You now have somthing on the order of an inch and a half of subfloor ready for thinset and tile. Probably going to cost you about 5. Your best bet would be to burn the pain off some how..

OMG these are all rediculous suggestions. Steam off the paint with a steam mop and rough the concrete up a bit. The tile will be fine. Suggesting another product over the concrete is overkill. Took me about 5 hours to prep about sq feet for tile. Did not remove the paint between grooves unless it was loose. Used a long scraper shovel to remove the puckered paint arount the grooves.

Dust did not fly everywhere but a dusk mask and earplugs were essential. Should bond the 12" tile to the floor real well as it will have both a mechanical and chemical bond in the groove with the thinset to the freshly exposed concete in the groove. I suppose you could achieve the same result by drilling shallow holes ever couple of inches but I found using the chisel bit to groove easy enough.

You can install a CBU or cement board on the concrete, then the tile on top of that. Finally, you can use an uncoupling membrane between the tile and the concrete. In most cases, it is OK to lay tiles directly onto concrete. But make sure the surface is free of any contaminants, dust, moisture, etc, as these can prevent the adhesive from bonding.

If the concrete floor is not in good condition, or may be at risk of cracking, an uncoupling membrane is recommended. Ceramic tile can be directly applied to flat paint surfaces, unfinished dry wall or gypsum board. To attach ceramic tile to walls covered with high gloss paint, prepare the surface just as you would for semi-gloss paint.

A concrete floor can be resurfaced to a polished shine. Once a concrete surface has been painted, resurfacing requires some time and effort. Solutions for resurfacing depend on project goals. If the goal is to achieve an entirely new, unblemished surface and look, complete removal of old paint is a must. After all, cracks and uneven areas in the concrete can cause damage to the tile above, and uncontrolled moisture in the concrete can destroy the mortar and loosen the tiles.

Not only will this cover bare concrete, but it covers twice as much space on a painted floor. With a high gloss finish, you can walk on this floor in just twenty-four hours. Although cement resists water to a certain extent, it will change color as it absorbs a small amount of the water.

Alternately, a sealed cement floor will cause the water to bead up and sit on the surface without absorbing. To remove the sealer, it would be best to use a sandblaster. Although you need a little experience and protective clothing, this is the fastest and simplest way to remove all the sealant from cement. However, you can also hire a professional if necessary. Unfortunately, the paint and surface are sub-optimal for mortar.

Luckily, in this case, there is an easier solution. Use 3. This mesh covering can be nailed to the existing concrete to provide a surface for your mortar. Once installed, you can use the lath instead of the wall behind it to hold up your mortar and tiles. You will need to mix your thin set to the consistency of creamy peanut butter for this project. The thick mortar will fill the gaps between the mesh and smooth well over the surface.

Once this layer has dried overnight, you can mix a new batch and set your tiles in place. Please note, it may take longer to dry in damp climates. Adding mortar over paint is never a great plan. Though it may work in the short term, you cannot tile over painted concrete directly. Adding a layer of epoxy will give you a substantial connection that holds better and lasts longer. Removing paint is time-consuming but not overly difficult. You can dissolve it with a paint stripper or sand it away.

Sometimes a heat gun will help with paint removal, but it depends on the type of paint. Moreover, you can vacuum or blow sandblasted paint away when you finish. You can still use epoxy if your concrete is unpainted. Since concrete epoxy works as a thin set for tile, you will have a lovely, solid tile floor regardless of the paint layer.
