But I cannot open this file to see what is there and delete anything not needed. I'm a beginner so could someone walk me through opening this file, or should it just be deleted? Joined Nov 14, Messages Hello k1littlebit, mediaID. If you move your backup files to any other location, make sure you copy mediaID. If you delete this file, your operating system, which i am assuming is Windows Vista, will not recognise your backup.

But if I can't delete this file how can I open up more space on my recovery drive? I have backed it up and emptied 2 files in there. The other 2 files are recovery which I know needs to stay there and the mediaId. Thanks for the help I'm really confused. Joined Sep 7, Messages Why not just buy a portable hard drive and back it up on there? It will be a lot safer and more secure.

How big is your recovery file? Joined Jan 15, Messages 3, I would consider what BillSnapwire has suggested for as soon as you can manage it as this is a much safer option. That kind of space isnt realy enough for a backup recovery drive and is an internal drive, thus can get as damaged as much as your primary drive.

You have to understand I'm a 50 year old grandmother that just likes to play hidden object games on my laptop. The backup completed successfully so I rebuilt the machine. On trying to rebuild, I run bakup and restore center and it cant even see the drive it can see the C partition, the E recovery partition and nothing else.

Tried copying it to the E partition and forcing it to use it but get backup location not found which is mentioned elsewhere as an issue with mediaid. Thanks a Lot! I was anxious seeking for this Solution!!!!

You are the man! Wanda Wills. Unzip the sdutil. Copy the sdutil. Copy the file GlobalCatalog. A new MediaID. Try to restore the backup as usual using the advanced restore option and next the option restore an older backup created in this machine 9. If it fails: Map a network driver at your LAN Copy the MediaId. Try to restore the backup as usual using the advanced restore option and next the option restore backup created in another machine At the next menu, point the backup folder at your LAN mapped driver and start the restore process Now you shall have your backup proper restored at the right machine Good Luck!

Wanda, since this procedure sounds link it worked for you, mqybe you can explain the issue I continue to have. I ran the DOS util as procedure stated and put in the cmd. Util said it was successful and created another mediaid. There was already one in the root so I hade to rename it first. The new one came out to be the same size as the original, 1K and I still have the problem.

A very similar thing happened to me. Two days later the system hard drive crashed. No problem, I thought, I'm protected by a backup. So far, so good. So, I'm using 'normal user' skills and it seems all will be well. It rumbles around a while then it pops up with 'We see you've recently restored from a complete backup, use 'advanced restore' and so forth Ok, fine, I do that.

I need to use 'restore files made on another computer' -- even though it's the same computer. This is using Windows Vista Ultimate with all the updates and packs. So it rumbles around some more then pops up with Error 0xA 'Check your hardware' and related. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. I have the same question Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit. Worked without faulting. HOWEVER, it did not put all my files and executables where they came from in spite of ticking the "in original position".

To me that doesn't matter because I have all the valid disks for reinstalling my programs If you follow the procedure below then note that I have inserted a copy of line 6 as 6 2 with the amended procedure for 'newbies'
